Brent Wilson-The Man Behind Menswear
18.10.10
Brent Wilson is a man on a mission, since starting his eponymous label in 2003 he has been the man making sure men from every walk of life are well dressed and well shod.
Brent is a style savvy man with a good business head and a hunk of brown curls to protect it. With a vision in mind and a strong set of skills under his belt, Brent made his way around the Australian industry learning from its best, he learnt to do street at Volcom and polished at Wayne Cooper and then he took it all away and combined the two to create what is now one of Australia’s leading menswear labels.
He is one smart cookie and we are pretty sure he has prophetic skills, not only does he have an uncanny ability to foresee the next contemporary direction fashion will take and often proceed it, but in 2008 he saw the global financial crisis coming and started his diffusion line Basics by Brent Wilson, way ahead of the times.
The line compromises all the essentials, t-shirts, singlets, hoodies, vests and swim shorts and they are right there beside his tailored suits and jackets and unbelievable one off’s like his hand painted Florence Broadhurst shoes and bow ties.

When you walk into Brent Wilson’s concept store in the Galeries you are greeted by a polished interior, dark antique woods, a brown marble counter and an ornate white polished wall. Sitting on the counter is a copy of, “Fashion: Australian and New Zealand designers," opened to the page featuring Brent and his iconic menswear, which have well and truly earned their place in there. The interior is seemingly fitting for his clothing which contrasts timeless and trendy, refined and laid back in a way that is pristine, minimal and uncomplicated

We think Brent Wilson is doing pretty a good job of making sure men step up to the sartorial stage, young and old, conservative or bold, creative or corporate, as Brent tells us, “There are no stereotypes for the Brent Wilson man, our collections are adapted and worn to our customers individual styling and direction."
We managed to tie Brent down very briefly to tell us a little bit about Brent Wilson from the man to the menswear...
Brent Wilson is geared to be a complete lifestyle brand can you give us a quick snapshot of what your lifestyle is like?
Very busy to say the least, I don’t like to stand still. I love to be continually challenged through work & to surround myself with inspiring people, places and objects.
Why did you decide to start your basics line?
We saw that there was a substantial gap in the market place for a fashion forward high quality yet extremely price conscious men’s wear brand so our diffusion line entitled the basics by Brent Wilson was born.
Your garments have become a favourite with celebrities both nationally and internationally. Can you tell us about some of the people who have worn Brent Wilson?
There have been so many over the years but I would have to say the most memorable would have to be Stephano Pilati, creative director of Yves Saint Laurent.
What is coming up for Brent Wilson?
There are so many great things happening at the moment, we are currently re-locating our office and showrooms to Sydney’s Surry hills where we will also be opening a concept store, an online store will be revealed in November and plans to expand into O/S markets next year are among a few very exciting things coming up!
That does all sound very exciting but for now Brent Wilson has plenty in store in the Galeries to keep us on our toes. Check out some of his summer wares.
