Want to see your design worn on t-shirts all around the world? Well, Graniph's Design Award is back for 2012!

This award is a global t-shirt design competition with a strong history of introducing up-and-coming and established design talent to Japan and the world.

Founded in 2001, Graniph has pioneered a new culture of fusing art and fashion on the timeless medium of the t-shirt. As defined, a t-shirt is a garment that is used to cover most of a person’s torso. It is considered to be a basic necessity that is vital to survival and everyday living. Through collaborations with cutting edge artists from around the world we constantly provide our customers with the freshest limited edition t-shirts at a refreshing price. From our first store in Tokyo's trendy Shimokitazawa neighborhood, Graniph has blossomed to over 80 specialist t-shirt stores spread throughout Asia-Pacific.

With total past entries of over 30,000, Graniph are looking forward to digging out a whole lot more this year and it would be great to find some of those entrants from Australia!

Aiming to support the development of artists and designers worldwide, the award has 4 prizes to be won. The winner of the Gold award will walk away with 500,000 yen, as well as having their winning design produced and sold by Graniph internationally.

Vans Bowl-A-Rama

Coming up later in February is the famous VANS BOWL-A-RAMA which will be held at Bondi between the 21st and 26th February 2012.

During the event, Some of the best venue's across Sydney's iconic Bondi Beach play host to the biggest week of skateboarding infused cultural festivities in Australia.

Culminating with the biggest professional concrete event in the Southern Hemisphere, Bondi Beach Skatepark will play host to the 8th annual Vans BOWL-A-RAMA in Bondi on Saturday February 25th.

Tropfest Turns Twenty!

Tropfest, Australia’s most prestigious short film festival and one of Sydney’s most iconic summer cultural events is approaching. Tropfest is the world’s largest short film festival and is recognised particularly in Australia for its enormous contribution to the Australian film industry. The competition provides a unique platform for emerging filmmakers, actors and producers through its various events, and competitions.

Originally beginning at the Tropicana Cafe in Sydney’s Darlinghurst by John Polson, this year Tropfest celebrates its 20^th Birthday. ‘Tropicana Short Film Festival’ (as it was originally known) began as an informal short film screening for cast, crew and friends. More than 200 people showed up for that first screening.

20 years on and 150, 000 people will descend upon the Domain in Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens, with live satellite links across the country and another 240, 000 tuning in live on Foxtel’s Movie Extra.

The annual short film competition is open to anyone who wishes to enter – regardless of their background or experience. 16 Finalists are selected from an entry pool of an average 700 annual entries and compete for more than $100,000 in prizes. Tropfest films are unique in that they have all been made specifically for Tropfest, will premiere at Tropfest and include the Tropfest Signature Item, which changes each year.

The Tropfest Signature Item for Movie Extra Tropfest 2012 is “LIGHT BULB”.

It is free to attend, and is an outdoor celebration complete with live music and entertainment, public catering and bars, red carpet arrivals and the highly anticipated film screenings followed by an awards ceremony. So bring a picnic blanket and some friends for a summer’s night in Sydney like no other. Fingers crossed for wonderful weather, and a fantastic night of film viewing.

Kimbra Goes Platinum

A big congratulations to new artist Kimbra, whose debut album Vows has reached certified Platinum album sales of the ARIA charts. Kimbra also managed to land four tracks on the Triple J Hottest 100, including her duet with Gotye ‘Somebody That I used to know’ which reached number 1.

Born in New Zealand, but now based in Melbourne, Kimbra has made a big name for herself since the release of her first single “Settle Down” in 2010.

She recently performed as part of the Big Day Out 2012 tour across Australia. She has also been in LA writing with soul talent John Legend and Grammy Award-winning producer and musician Greg Kurstin who has worked with pop acts like Lily Allen and Kelly Clarkson among others.

The Hottest 100

Yesterday saw big celebrations across the country and the world for Australia Day. While the weather in Sydney was less than desirable, it was perfect to enjoy Triple J's Hottest 100 countdown. Listeners have been busy over the past few weeks voting for their favourite songs of 2011.

Melbourne musician Gotye topped this year's chart with his break-up ode, Somebody That I used to Know, featuring New Zealand singer Kimbra who also appeared on the list. The duet was the highest selling Australian song of last year, and has had over 50 million views on YouTube.

Gotye, aka Wally De Backer is now about to embark on a sellout US tour next month, and is set to take on the world.

While more commercial radio stations tend to support more international talent, Triple J listeners voted 10 homegrown songs into the Top 20 of the Hottest 100.

Gotye's new release album: Making Mirrors is in store at JB Hi Fi for $19.99. Also available is his back catalogue 'Mixed Blood' (2007), 'Like Drawing Blood' (2006), 'Boardface' (2003) all for $22.99.

She has since written for numerous publications such as Girlfriend, FAMOUS and OK! Magazine, as well as various websites both locally and overseas. This year welcomes the launch of her third book "Ultimate Fashionista - The Young Hollywood Style Guide".

Here we find out more about Alana as she answers the Proust Questionnaire.

1) What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Being at home with my family on a Sunday afternoon after we've had a tremendously delicious meal together.

2) What historical figure do you most identify with?

I don't know that I've ever really thought about it but I've always had a soft spot for Louisa May Alcott, who was a famous novelist best known for writing "Little Women". As a family, the Alcott's were incredibly close and really thought outside the box in terms of how to live... They were always a bit different, which some people found hard to understand - and I guess to an extent, that reminds me of my family and the way my sister and I were raised.

3) Which living person do you most admire?

There are too many to list but in terms of those in the public eye, I admire Christina Ricci. I think I've been obsessed with her since the age of about 10. She's a fantastic actress who has stuck to her guns and has always walked to the beat of her own drum.

4) What is the trait you most deplore in others?

I can't stand attention seekers!

5) When and where were you happiest?

I always seem to be my happiest when I'm on holidays in the States. I really love Los Angeles and find myself instantly relaxed and excited the moment I step off that plane!

6) What would you consider your greatest achievement?

Finally getting "Ultimate Fashionista" written, edited and ready for the printers was a pretty amazing moment but I'd like to think my greatest achievement is still to come.

7) What is your most treasured possession?

My late grandfather's favourite schooner glass.

8) If you died and came back as a person or thing what would it be?

I'd love to come back as our cat, Bam... He's so pampered and loved! All he does is eat, sleep and then sleep some more. It's nice to know I have such high expectations for myself...

2012 All Year Resolutions

New Year’s Resolutions are more often than not broken, so it seems more fitting to question ‘why make resolutions in the new year only?’ Be encouraged by the wisdom of Alain de Botton. The below is a must read if you are debating with your mind about what to commit to, and how to stick with a goal no matter when you set or achieve it.

We don’t tend to make resolutions about things we completely believe in. Few of us would ever resolve to be appalled by war or disease. It just comes naturally. But we do resolve all the time to be kinder or more hardworking, because a sizeable part of us loves being cruel and sitting around. A resolution always hovers over a grave inner conflict and constitutes a vow by one part of ourselves against another. Which is why – according to some - we should never be so foolish as to make a resolution.

And yet we need resolutions - even if we don’t actually manage to carry them through or rather, precisely because we rarely manage to do so. Trying to lead a moral and a good life must mean regularly daring ourselves to be good. It’s sometimes said that deep down we are all essentially honest, well meaning and kind. I’m not too sure: left to our own devices, we have a frightening tendency to be self-indulgent, selfish, narcissistic and lazy. So we need resolutions for the same reason as we need laws: to keep ourselves in check.

A resolution is a voluntary abdication of our freedom and immediate gratification in the interests of a higher goal. As such, it is a symbol of civilization, defined as an institution, which regulates our wilder, more destructive desires for the sake of the common wealth and our own flourishing. Resolutions are minor laws that we pass against our unruly selves. We might be tempted to mock the public nature of resolutions. Why resolve things at New Year? Why tell people? Precisely for the same reason that we tend to go in for public marriage: because it can be useful to back up our own resolve with the pressure that stems from the expectation of others. It is often not bad enough to let ourselves down, so in addition, we need the fear of letting lots of people down to keep us on track. By being declared in public, a resolution gains confirmation and amplification. We can use the energy that surrounds the birth of a new year to lend our own inner change some impetus.

Julia DeVille is a taxidermist and jewellery designer, although her jewellery is more like works of art.

A selection of her wares are stocked in Alphaville in The Galeries, but she also has larger taxidermy works in museums everywhere.

No animals are hurt in the making of her pieces, in fact she is all about preserving the love people have for their animals.

We knew she would have some great insightful answers for our Proust Questionnaire and we were right.

Edgar Allan Poe (from a creative perspective).

When and where were you happiest?

When I get to go home to New Zealand to hang out with my Mum.

What would you consider your greatest achievement?

Having two pieces in the permanent collection of MONA (The Museum of Old and New Art) in Hobart. Namely The Cinerarium, an on site burial ground that I designed and created. You can buy a plot and have your ashes housed in one of my urns in the Museum. There are two people there currently (and a taxidermy raven).

What is your most treasured possession?

My dogs, Chilli & Scout.

If you died and came back as a person or thing what would it be?

An Anglo Nubian Goat. The most beautiful and intriguing creature.

Sydney Festival 2012

Sydney Festival is running from 7^th- 29^th January and is a great way to get involved in fun and often free events around the city this summer.

Festival First Night on Saturday 7^th January is always a fun event and this year features Manu Chao La Ventura,  Washington,  Gurrumul , Holly Throsby, Trocadero Dance Palace,  Norman Jay , The Jolly Boys  and so much more!

Performances, art installations and music will fill the city, and also the Domain for a night of fun, and celebration of a fantastic city.

For some further fun in the days that follow, check out the Keystone Festival Bar at the Hyde Park Barracks Museum, where international music acts feature over the course of the festival.

The film follows a woman who smashed through the barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male-dominated world. The story concerns power and the price that is paid for power, and is a surprising and insightful portrait of an extraordinary and complex woman. Meryl Streep who portrayed Thatcher has received nine industry nominations for her role including a Golden Globe Nomination for Best Actress In a Motion Picture Drama. Iron Lady is now playing at both major and independent cinemas.

Make Mexican & Margherita's With Xmas Leftovers!

Celebrate summer in Sydney as though you're in Cancun. Blend up some icy Margherita's and use Christmas leftovers to make a delicious Mexican inspired Turkey Con Chilli by Jamie Oliver.

Method Serves 4-6

Try to think of this recipe as a principle, rather than something you have to follow really strictly. I want you to embrace your own leftovers so adjust the recipe accordingly. If you need to swap out some of the vegetables that’s fine, and different tinned or jarred beans will all work well too. I’ve given you a weight of turkey here, but you can use whatever you’ve got left over. It’s all about building up layers of flavour with the sweet vegetable base then turning whatever you add to it into a beautiful meal with great spice and attitude. It’s brilliant with steamed rice, or rolled up in warmed tortillas.

Preheat the oven to 180ºC/350ºF/gas 4. Heat a few lugs of olive oil in a large casserole-type pan on a medium heat. Add the onions, carrot, leek, peppers and chilies, and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes. Add the coriander stalks, cumin and paprika, and cook for another 10 minutes or so, stirring frequently until soft and delicious. Sometimes I like to add some honey and white wine vinegar at this point and let it cook for a couple of minutes. I find this adds a wonderful sheen and enhances the natural sweetness of the vegetables.

While that’s happening, shred the turkey meat off your carcass and roughly chop it. Add a good pinch of salt and pepper to the pan of vegetables, then add the turkey and take the pan off the heat. Add the tomatoes and chickpeas or butter beans and stir everything together. Pop it in the hot oven to blip away for 2 hours. Check on it after an hour, and add a splash of water if it looks a bit dry.

While that’s cooking, make your guacamole by blitzing one of your avocados in a food processor with the tomatoes, onion, garlic, chilli and coriander. Use a fork to mash the other avocado in a bowl so it’s nice and chunky. Taste the mixture in the food processor and add salt and squeezes of lime juice until the taste is just right for you. Whiz up one more time then tip into the bowl with your chunky avocado and mix together.

Take the chilli out of the oven and scrape all the gnarly bits from the edge of the pan back into the chilli for added flavour. Squeeze in some lime juice, and stir through most of the coriander leaves. Have a taste to check the seasoning then serve with steamed basmati rice or tortillas, and a good dollop of sour cream and guacamole on top. Scatter over your remaining coriander leaves and some finely sliced fresh chilli if you fancy then get everyone to tuck in.

Turkey Con Chilli

• olive oil

• 2 red onions, peeled and roughly chopped

• 1 carrot, peeled and roughly chopped

• 1 leek, trimmed and roughly chopped

• 1 red pepper, deseeded and roughly chopped

• 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and roughly chopped

• 1 fresh red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped

• 1 fresh green chilli, deseeded and finely chopped

• a bunch of fresh coriander, stalks finely chopped, leaves picked

• 1 teaspoon ground cumin

• 1 heaped teaspoon smoked paprika

• optional: 1 heaped teaspoon runny honey

• optional: 3 tablespoons white wine vinegar

• 600g leftover turkey, shredded

• sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

• 3 x 400g tins chopped tomatoes

• 1 x 400g tin butter beans or chickpeas, drained

• juice of 2 limes

soured cream, to serve

Guacamole

• 2 ripe avocados, peeled and destoned

• 2 tomatoes, halved

• ¼ of a red onion, peeled

• ½ a garlic clove, peeled

• 1 fresh green chilli, deseeded

• a bunch of fresh coriander

• juice of 1 lime

The other two members of this dynamic trio are Felix Chan and Arran Russell and together these three boys manage to churn out an amazing four collections a year, the latest was their high summer collaboration with leading streetwear brand Stussy, but there is more to come on that later.

Look up! There are over 900 novels, donated by Random House beneath The Galeries ceiling. This cascading chandelier of novels is our way of celebrating literary genius and you’ll also find quotes from literary legends displayed throughout The Galeries.

As with all our exhibitions, there are plenty of exciting activities happening in conjunction with this epic literary display.

There is a competition for all book lovers; Murakami Mayhem offers one lucky person the chance to win a hand crafted limited edition signed copy of Murakami's 1Q84 box set, 1 of only 111 in the world. Runners up will receive prizes including a Vintage Classics Rainbow Set and an Incu Voucher.
