There is too much to see at Sydney Writers' Festival

Sydney Writers' Festival is in full swing this week and at locations not far from The Galeries. Held primarily down at Pier 2/3, Pier 4/5 and Sydney Theatre at lovely Walsh Bay and other venues around Sydney including Town Hall, this year's events are seriously inspiring.

Come and hear words from some of the world's most loved writers and watch this year's most celebrated authors receive prestigious awards.

A couple of examples include this afternoon at the Carrington Hotel, 'Everyone's a Critic: Food and Culture in a Digital Age' which will see Charlotte Wood and Elizabeth Merryment discuss the digital age where every civilian with internet access is a critic or see author Jeff Kinney, author of some of the most famous children's books of all time including 'Dairy of a Wimpy Kid' meet and greet on Wednesday evening.

The offerings of this year's festival are plentiful with upwards of 10 events on each day. Many are now sold out, so if you love books, writing or just want to get up close and personal with some of your favourites then get involved!

After a huge refurbishment to The Galeries Food Hall in 2011, city workers now have the luxury of enjoying their lunch in award winning surrounds.

The Food Hall was awarded The 2012 Best of State Commercial Design Award at the annual Australian Interior Design Awards.

One of the most important celebrations of Australian Interior Design was held last Friday, with the awards being presented during a gala dinner at Sydney’s Dalton House.

This year the shortlisted projects, across the breadth of the categories, displayed the highest of standards with incredible design practice evident in emerging and more established firms alike, so it is a great honour to recieve this award.

Congratulations to The Uncarved Block the team behind The Galeries Food Hall's modern and sleek design.

The Dark Knight Teaser Three

One of the most highly anticipated cinematic releases of 2012 is keeping fans on the edge of their seats, with yet another trailer release.

The Dark Knight Rises, the third and final installment in Director Christopher Nolan's Batman Trilogy has audiences waiting with baited breath after the release of the third trailer for the film.

All three films have starred Hollywood actor Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne aka Batman, and have seen him protecting his home, Gotham City. The trilogy has wowed audiences with its advanced cinematic special effects, and integration of incredible motion technology.

From what we have seen so far in the trailers, we can expect nothing less of The Dark Knight Rises.

While waiting for its release head to JB-Hi-Fi to watch the DVD's of the two previous films in the trilogy Batman Begins and The Dark Knight in anticipation.

The Alpha60 Retail Experience

The brother and sister duo Alex and Georgie Cleary, behind fashion brand Alpha60, are currently gracing the cover of Habitus Magazine Issue #15.

Habitus is a quarterly magazine for and about design hunters – the homes they build, the landscapes that surround them, and the products and works of art they put inside. Homes, products and people are drawn from the rich design landscape of Australasia.

In the article the duo talk about ‘the direction of their fashion brand, and the design of Alpha60’s retail stores having given them firm grounding for tackling the design of their own home’ in the Melbourne suburb of Northcote.

The article as reported by Alice Blackwood, ‘explores Alex and Georgie’s design ethos from a fashion and brand perspective’.

The pair bring unusual designs and modern, wearable pop history to their Sydney retail space Alphaville in The Galeries, by way of an aesthetic that is halfway between a museum and apothecary. Dolls heads - reminiscent of the rubble left in WW1 German toy factories - speckle the walls and ceilings of this curious and cinematic interior.

In Alice Blackwood’s Habitus interview Alex Cleary says “For us a retail shop is more than just a space, it’s an entire experience… from the fit-out, to the clothes, the music, to the person who greets you when you walk in.”

Writers Discuss Personal vs Public Boundaries in Writing

In a world where technology promotes the sharing of information, images and personal details at an alarming speed, where books are now available on devices with not a page in sight, and where auto tune re writes the greatest of speeches, musical lyrics and real life news reports, there is a thing to be said for celebrating writers. Whilst anyone with a computer can now claim to be a published author, it is still imperative that we celebrate a time when pen was put to paper (a time that is not over by any means) and pages were turned with bated breath.

The 2012 Sydney Writers’ Festival will focus on the line between the public and private as the question of what is still defined as ‘personal’ is one of the hottest subjects around.

In a time where online bloggers are seen to have considerable credibility, and information loaded onto the Internet is expected to stay there forever more, many questions are brought about in regards to privacy and the sharing of information in writing.

In his welcome address, Festival Artistic Director Chip Rolley suggested, “Now, via Facebook and Twitter, we voluntarily tell the world things we previously might not have told even our loved ones. Investigative journalists thrive on leaks and finding out what others don’t want us to know and the state knows few boundaries (personal or political) in its need to prevent another 9/11.”

This year the Sydney Writers’ Festival will question if everything is fair game. after a year that has included global scandals at leading newspapers, a continued slump in magazine sales, and the ever growing number of blogs online.

There is an all-star line up of authors from both Australia and around the world including acclaimed fiction and non-fiction writers . “The private and the personal are subjects that have always preoccupied writers and have been the focus of much fiction as well as memoir, biography, history and reportage. This year’s guests exemplify powerful examples of such writing .” says Rolley.

While autumn and winter bring with them colder weather, there are still plenty of reasons to get out and about in Sydney. There has been huge buzz around the creative planning behind Vivid Sydney this year. Vivid Sydney is the festival that brings together lights, music and ideas in a series of unforgettable displays.

From spectacular 3D mapped projections on Sydney Opera House, Customs House and Museum of Contemporary Art to interactive art sculptures, giant glowing dandelions, fibre optic sea grass and animatronics as dancing lamps; this year’s Vivid Sydney will once again transform Sydney into a colourful playground of light.

From 6pm to midnight every night, there will be a free light show with over 50 interactive and immersive light art sculptures, illuminated skyscrapers and large scale projections around The Rocks, Circular Quay and Sydney Opera House.

The show will take you to a night time playground of interactive light installations which everyone will enjoy. Artists, selected from all over the world, have created a giant digital game of Tic Tac Toe, and a modern spin on Hopscotch.

There are golden flocking birds and head turning digital puppies. Follow your dreams with the luminous wings or just have a good old-fashioned shout at the installation Screaming Rapture.

As well as the incredible light displays, there has been an impressive line-up of international and local musical talent confirmed to play at the Opera House as part of Vivid Live.

New Balance New Trend

Having produced shoes since the early 1900’s, New Balance has been a brand concerned with meeting the needs of everyday athletes for more than 100 years. Part of producing superior footwear and athletic apparel is manufacturing it to fit all widths and sizes, because a better fit produces better performance.

It seems the brand has not only impressed sportsmen and women, but now also fashion’s elite, with New Balance Sneakers spotted at fashion week in Milan, Paris, New York and London.

Globally, Vans are taking part in many interesting projects.

The Galeries discovered Via Hypebeast an amazing Van's project taking place in Austria.

The launch of art exhibition Vans Wängl Tängl saw a couple of hundred party-goers and art fans checking out works on display by Fos, French, Blaise Rosenthal, Ed Templeton, Tristan Huber, Corey Smith, Schoph, Danny Wainwright, Danny Larsen and Tim Karpinski.

"It's been great to be part of a show that brings together such a strong line-up of artists and it's pretty amazing to see everyone's different styles", said artist Schoph, who used the occasion to premiere a new work called Dead Questions in the Eyes. "I've been in plenty of shows now but the Looking Sideways crew have definitely raised the bar in terms of the space and the quality of the work".

Other highlights at the show included a huge 6' by 4' illustration by skater and artist French, which dominated the gallery in Mayrhofen's Europahaus, and the start of a huge live art piece by Looking Sideways art director Owen Tozer. It's being created using images sent in by members of the public, who were invited to contribute to the project by uploading images of their eyes looking sideways to the LS Facebook page, or by emailing them to eyes@wearelookingsideways.com.

The final piece will be used to create the graphics for an exclusive run of limited edition Looking Sideways x Endeavor x Vans Wängl Tängl snowboards, with the winners of the boards chosen from those who contributed images.

Lane Four at The Galeries has recently launched a new moving photographic exhibition, [thousand words]. The exhibition is based on the concept that a picture speaks thousand words and offers an exclusive insight into the intimate and defining moments of some of Australia’s most talented photographers.

Curated by aMBUSH Gallery, ten photographers have been invited to submit a single thought-provoking image, accompanied by 100words to describe their inspiration and the story behind the photograph. These ten photographic stories make up a [thousand words].

[thousand words] presents a photojournalistic approach to the imagery coupled with a behind-the-scenes type of storytelling experience. The exhibition features images and thoughts from high profile and emerging Australian photographers including, Montalbetti + Campbell, Andrew Quilty, Tim Georgeson, Amanda Prior and Stephen Dupont.

In keeping with the concept that a picture can evoke profound meaning and make an impact on the viewing audience, see the below images by French artist JR.

Exhibiting freely in the streets all over the world, his works catch the attention of people who are not museum visitors. His work mixes Art and Act, talks about commitment, freedom, identity and limits, and provokes thought and conversation amongst the people of the cities he transforms.

His story began after he found a camera in the Paris subway, after doing a tour of European Street Art, tracking the people who communicate messages via the walls, he started to work on the vertical limits, watching the people and the passage of life from the forbidden undergrounds and roofs of the capital. In 2006, he exhibited Portrait of a generation, portraits of the suburban "thugs" which he posted, in huge formats, in the bourgeois districts of Paris.What began as an illigal project soon became official when the Paris City Hall wrapped it's building with JR's photographs.

In 2007, he exhibited Face 2 Face, the biggest illegal photo exhibition ever. JR posted huge portraits of Israelis and Palestinians face to face in eight Palestinian and Israeli cities, and on the both sides of the Security fence / Separation wall. The experts said it would be impossible. Still, he did it.

In 2008, he embarked for a long international trip for "Women", a project in which he underlines the dignity of women who are often the targets of conflicts.

JR creates "Pervasive Art" that spreads uninvited on the buildings of the slums around Paris, on the walls in the Middle-East, on the broken bridges in Africa or the favelas in Brazil.

The works he creates in these places transform the people in the towns and cities, as there is no way to separate the subject from the spectator. The audience doesn't just see it, they make it. Elderly women become models for a day; kids turn artists for a week.

After these local exhibitions, the images are transported to London, New York, Berlin or Amsterdam where people interpret them in the light of their own personal experience. JR leaves the space empty for an encounter between the subject/protagonist and the passer-by/interpreter.

JR raises questions... and asks each and every person viewing his images to consider the thousand words behind every photograph, as well as the story behind every human being.

JR is currently working on 2 new projects: Wrinkles of the City which questions the memory of a city and its inhabitants and Unframed, which reinterprets in huge formats photos from important photographers taken from the archives of museums.

Happy Birthday Harbour Bridge

Today the Sydney Harbour Bridge is celebrating its 80^th birthday, as one of Australia’s most iconic structures.

After 4000 workers, spent eight years of building, the coathanger (as it has come to be known) was opened to traffic on March 19^th 1932.

Today it carries about 160,000 vehicles across Sydney Harbour every weekday, and holds the world record for the widest long span bridge.

Last weekend The Galeries enjoyed the sounds of Rhythm and Blues over Saturday and Sunday, this week come and listen to Electro and Lounge Music playing live from 11:30-2pm both Saturday and Sunday at The Galeries as part of March to The Music.

Something so lovely to watch as people stopped to listen, wandered past and tapped their feet to the tune, and sat and enjoyed the live music all afternoon, was the way people documented the event. Snapping photos on their phones, filming videos, bringing out their cameras to capture the moment.

For that reason this Friday The Galeries are celebrating beautiful images of Musicians.

Some in performance, some in photoshoots, others simply caught off guard. All of them are beautiful, and capture the mood and music of the artist photographed.

Game for Season Two

For those of you who aren't familiar, Game of Thrones is an American medieval fantasy tv series created by HBO. Based on author George R.R. Martin's best selling series of Novels, "A song of Ice and Fire' (of which the first novel is titled A Game of Thrones) the series debuted in April 2011.

Since then it has established an incredible fanbase, and now Series Two is about to launch to much excitement.

“The More You Love”, the trailer below, showcases the intricate interpersonal entanglements the much anticipated second season promises.

If the teaser is anything to go by, this season is brewing with more than a just war in the land of Westeros.

Cracking Kiwi Campaign

There has been rivalry between Australia and New Zealand for as long as anyone can remember. Competition between the two nations extends to the Bledisloe Cup, the debate over who really invented pavlova and who claims Russell Crowe as their Hollywood star.

In an attempt to prove to Australia just how great their nation really is Air New Zealand Presents: The Kiwi Sceptics. This new brand campaign follows the journey of Air New Zealand’s attempts to convert four Australian ‘sceptics’ into advocates for New Zealand.

The short webisodes feature four very different Australian ‘rejecters’ of NZ being paired with compatible Kiwi guides to show them a good time.

The Hipster, Bali Girl, Aussie-Aussie and The Europhile - all initially told they were travelling to other exotic destinations are not overly pleased with the news that they were in fact, going to New Zealand.

New Zealand comedian Rhys Darby provides the voiceover to what are four different adventures of the land of the All Blacks, a whole lot of sheep and the hilarious duo Flight of the Conchords.

Salmon From Southern India

Australia is known for its incredible seafood, and what better way to spice up your day than by combining fresh salmon and the aromatic spices of Southern India.

Cook up a storm using Jamie Oliver’s Recipe for Salmon Tikka with cucumber yoghurt. Quick to make and a delight to eat, if this recipe has tantilised your taste buds, head to Curry Avenue in The Galeries Food Hall for an Indian feast this lunchtime.

Ingredients

• 2 naan breads

• 1 fresh red chilli

• ½ a cucumber

• 1 lemon

• 4 tablespoons natural yoghurt

• sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

• a few sprigs of fresh coriander

• 2 x 200g salmon fillets, skin on, scaled and bones removed

• 1 heaped tablespoon Patak’s tandoori curry paste

• olive oil

Method

• Preheat your oven to 110°C/225°F/gas ¼

• Pop your naan breads into the oven to warm through

• Halve, deseed and finely chop your chilli

• Peel and halve your cucumber lengthways, then use a spoon to scoop out and discard the seeds

• Roughly chop the cucumber and put most of it into a bowl

• Halve your lemon and squeeze the juice from one half into the bowl

• Add the yoghurt, a pinch of salt and pepper and half the chopped chilli

• Pick the coriander leaves and put to one side

• Slice each salmon fillet across lengthways into three 1.5cm wide slices

• Spoon the heaped tablespoon of tandoori paste into a small dish, then use a pastry brush or the back of a spoon to smear the tandoori paste all over each piece (don’t dip your pastry brush into the jar!)

• Heat a large frying pan over a high heat

• Once hot, add a lug of olive oil, put the salmon into the pan and cook for about 1½ minutes on each side, until cooked through

• Place a warmed naan bread on each plate

• Top each one with a good dollop of cucumber yoghurt and 3 pieces of salmon

• Scatter over a little of the reserved cucumber, chilli and coriander leaves and finish with a squeeze of lemon juice

By definition an alphabet is a standard set of letters. But there is nothing standard about the letters photographed by New York based, Vienna born photographer and stylist Bela Borsodi. After studying graphic design and fine art he started to work as a photographer.

And a close up to see the incredible detail involved in the sets.

His CV reads like a who’s who of the fashion, music, film, retail and art industries. Va Va Voom from Vidal Sassoon

While a few years old, we have recently rediscovered the feature-length Vidal Sassoon the Movie. Initially conceived by Bumble and Bumble founder Michael Gordon as a short film to give to Sassoon upon his 80th birthday, the project quickly evolved into a celebration of not only the hairstylist’s life but the art of the profession itself.

“It’s deeper than just me,” muses legendary hairstylist Vidal Sassoon on the documentary about his life. “It belongs to the craft.”

The film, which debuted at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival, follows Sassoon’s life, covers Sassoon's beginnings in an orphanage, his apprenticeship as a teen “shampoo boy” in London, and a stint in the Israeli army before he found international celebrity with his salon, established in 1954. Sassoon’s revolutionary approach freed women’s tresses from the need for pins and sprays, and created a host of era-defining styles, including the bobs he snipped for Mary Quant’s runways and the five-point geometric style—which he explains himself in today’s exclusive clip. Sassoon’s passion is still evident: “If you were to ask me what was the moment of complete joy, it was sharing; it was knowing that our work was not just copied but people utilized it, learned from it and then used their own artistry. That’s what it’s all about.”

LISTER SHOWS IN LA

After a successful showing of several exhibitions around Sydney this past summer including The Galeries own Lane Four exhibition “Rainbow City Gaze”, Anthony Lister has now unveiled a show at New Image Art Gallery in Los Angeles with an untitled solo exhibition. The exhibition features Lister’s thematic take on the ballerina as both an image of beauty and disfiguration.

This latest body of work was composed of sketches taken from a live model and featured both his studies and final paintings in his signature style as well as sculptures, with the opening night featuring a live dance performance as well as a hanging installation.

While some of you may be lucky enough to be heading to the US and can catch the show in L.A. the rest of us can check out a behind the scenes teaser video below.

Today Thursday 23^rd February is National SLAM day (Save Live Australia's Music).

SLAM (Save Live Australia's Music) have organised the date to support live music venues and the artists that play in them. SLAM is a collective of non-politically aligned, independent, local music-loving citizens.

It was conceived after 2010's Slam rally, which saw 20,000 live music supporters parade through Melbourne to protest against a legal link between live music and violence in Victoria.

It was Australia's largest ever cultural protest, and saw the policy lifted and licensing restrictions on small venues were amended.
