Our daily lives are so busy, that when someone does something kind or generous towards us, we often shoot through a quick email, or text saying thank you, and don’t take the time to truly acknowledge what has been given to us. Have a look at Leah Dieterich’s Blog ThxThxThx, for some inspiration as to all the things we should be thankful for.

Leah’s mother always told her to write thank you notes. So she does. To everything. Thxthxthx is her daily exercise to gratitude. She insists there is always something to be thankful for. From the important things like Songs You’re Embarrassed to Like, and Heavy Eyelids that Tell You When You Need to Sleep, to friends and family, love and loneliness, light and darkness, Leah Dieterich sets out to acknowledge them all.

If someone in your life has done something lovely of late, and you want to tell them just how great it made you feel, Monsterthreads have a fantastic selection of gift cards featuring beautiful illustrations from $4.95. It may be linked to a fragrance purchased running through duty free, the kind that emanates from our lover or child’s skin, or one of the many aromas that we associate with memories from home. A familiar scent is something that can whisk you back to that moment faster and more effectively than any photograph.

Scent is a trigger that remains with us throughout our life. Over the years we build up our own personal archive of smell, from past relationships, rented apartments, washing powder to family recipes. The scents from daily life are the most powerfully evocative of smells for most of us, but that doesn't diminish the fact that a huge industry has built up around creating products for the sole purpose of scenting our days. A scented candle, a bath essence, an expensive bottle of rich parfum are still presents we love to receive and, let's not forget it's easy for men to buy.

Mecca Cosmetica and The Body Shop have a great range of fragrances. The aim is clear: to transform the famous Grasse Rose, a symbol of voluptuousness and unqualified femininity in perfume, into an assertively virile fragrance for men. The result is a model of its kind: alternating feminine/masculine with the disturbing ambiguity of the Centifolia rose, quickly picked up by a chorus of warm, spicy, and woodsy notes such as cumin, olbanum, cedar and a touch of amber. In the background, the declared sensuality of Gaiac wood and cistus highlighted by a distinctly physical animal note, give this perfume a disconcerting sense of mystery. Blended by hand, each Le Labo fragrance is truly unique.
Jacqui LewisMon, 30 Jan 2012 12:31:00 ESTTO MARKET TO MARKEThttp://www.thegaleries.com/blog/article/to-market-to-market

Brian and Vincent Wu of Incu are excited to announce the release of the Apolis + Incu Sydney Market Bag ($69.00), sold exclusively at Incu at The Galeries. A symbol of good fortune and sign of intense power, the Oriental Dragon is regarded as a divine beast and brings with it hope for better times ahead in 2012.

Occuring every twelve years this year is considered especially auspicious because it is the year of the water dragon, something that happens once every 60 years.

Free spirits of the Chinese zodiac, people born in the Year of the Dragon tend to be extroverts who have a deep love for nature and are innovative, passionate, enterprising, brave, self-assured, colorful, and flamboyant. As a family, the Alcott's were incredibly close and really thought outside the box in terms of how to live... They were always a bit different, which some people found hard to understand - and I guess to an extent, that reminds me of my family and the way my sister and I were raised.

3) Which living person do you most admire?

There are too many to list but in terms of those in the public eye, I admire Christina Ricci. The below is a must read if you are debating with your mind about what to commit to, and how to stick with a goal no matter when you set or achieve it.

From The Archive: Making Resolutions by Alain de Botton

We don’t tend to make resolutions about things we completely believe in. Few of us would ever resolve to be appalled by war or disease. It just comes naturally. But we do resolve all the time to be kinder or more hardworking, because a sizeable part of us loves being cruel and sitting around. A resolution always hovers over a grave inner conflict and constitutes a vow by one part of ourselves against another. Which is why – according to some - we should never be so foolish as to make a resolution.

And yet we need resolutions - even if we don’t actually manage to carry them through or rather, precisely because we rarely manage to do so. Trying to lead a moral and a good life must mean regularly daring ourselves to be good. It’s sometimes said that deep down we are all essentially honest, well meaning and kind. I’m not too sure: left to our own devices, we have a frightening tendency to be self-indulgent, selfish, narcissistic and lazy. So we need resolutions for the same reason as we need laws: to keep ourselves in check.

A resolution is a voluntary abdication of our freedom and immediate gratification in the interests of a higher goal. As such, it is a symbol of civilization, defined as an institution, which regulates our wilder, more destructive desires for the sake of the common wealth and our own flourishing. Resolutions are minor laws that we pass against our unruly selves. We might be tempted to mock the public nature of resolutions. Why resolve things at New Year? Why tell people? Precisely for the same reason that we tend to go in for public marriage: because it can be useful to back up our own resolve with the pressure that stems from the expectation of others. It is often not bad enough to let ourselves down, so in addition, we need the fear of letting lots of people down to keep us on track. By being declared in public, a resolution gains confirmation and amplification. We can use the energy that surrounds the birth of a new year to lend our own inner change some impetus.

Read more from Alain de Botton at Books Kinokuniya and see him return to the Sydney Opera House February 23rd 2012 to discuss his new book, Religion for Atheists, a non-believer’s guide to the uses of religion. The film follows a woman who smashed through the barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male-dominated world. The story concerns power and the price that is paid for power, and is a surprising and insightful portrait of an extraordinary and complex woman. Blend up some icy Margherita's and use Christmas leftovers to make a delicious Mexican inspired Turkey Con Chilli by Jamie Oliver.

Method Serves 4-6

Try to think of this recipe as a principle, rather than something you have to follow really strictly. I want you to embrace your own leftovers so adjust the recipe accordingly. If you need to swap out some of the vegetables that’s fine, and different tinned or jarred beans will all work well too. I’ve given you a weight of turkey here, but you can use whatever you’ve got left over. It’s all about building up layers of flavour with the sweet vegetable base then turning whatever you add to it into a beautiful meal with great spice and attitude. It’s brilliant with steamed rice, or rolled up in warmed tortillas.

Preheat the oven to 180ºC/350ºF/gas 4. Heat a few lugs of olive oil in a large casserole-type pan on a medium heat. Add the onions, carrot, leek, peppers and chilies, and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes. Add the coriander stalks, cumin and paprika, and cook for another 10 minutes or so, stirring frequently until soft and delicious. Sometimes I like to add some honey and white wine vinegar at this point and let it cook for a couple of minutes. I find this adds a wonderful sheen and enhances the natural sweetness of the vegetables.

While that’s happening, shred the turkey meat off your carcass and roughly chop it. Add a good pinch of salt and pepper to the pan of vegetables, then add the turkey and take the pan off the heat. Add the tomatoes and chickpeas or butter beans and stir everything together. Pop it in the hot oven to blip away for 2 hours. Check on it after an hour, and add a splash of water if it looks a bit dry.

While that’s cooking, make your guacamole by blitzing one of your avocados in a food processor with the tomatoes, onion, garlic, chilli and coriander. Use a fork to mash the other avocado in a bowl so it’s nice and chunky. Taste the mixture in the food processor and add salt and squeezes of lime juice until the taste is just right for you. Whiz up one more time then tip into the bowl with your chunky avocado and mix together.

Take the chilli out of the oven and scrape all the gnarly bits from the edge of the pan back into the chilli for added flavour. Squeeze in some lime juice, and stir through most of the coriander leaves. Have a taste to check the seasoning then serve with steamed basmati rice or tortillas, and a good dollop of sour cream and guacamole on top. Scatter over your remaining coriander leaves and some finely sliced fresh chilli if you fancy then get everyone to tuck in.

ingredients

Turkey Con Chilli

• olive oil

• 2 red onions, peeled and roughly chopped

• 1 carrot, peeled and roughly chopped

• 1 leek, trimmed and roughly chopped

• 1 red pepper, deseeded and roughly chopped

• 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and roughly chopped

• 1 fresh red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped

• 1 fresh green chilli, deseeded and finely chopped

• a bunch of fresh coriander, stalks finely chopped, leaves picked

• 1 teaspoon ground cumin

• 1 heaped teaspoon smoked paprika

• optional: 1 heaped teaspoon runny honey

• optional: 3 tablespoons white wine vinegar

• 600g leftover turkey, shredded

• sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

• 3 x 400g tins chopped tomatoes

• 1 x 400g tin butter beans or chickpeas, drained

• juice of 2 limes

soured cream, to serve

Guacamole

• 2 ripe avocados, peeled and destoned

• 2 tomatoes, halved

• ¼ of a red onion, peeled

• ½ a garlic clove, peeled

• 1 fresh green chilli, deseeded

• a bunch of fresh coriander

• juice of 1 lime
Jacqui LewisThu, 29 Dec 2011 10:00:00 ESTPerson Of Interest Lana Del Rayhttp://www.thegaleries.com/blog/article/person-of-interest-lana-del-ray

Lana Del Ray, formerly NYC based songstress Lizzie Grant, has reinvented herself in a major way bursting onto the international music scene and dubbed as the one to watch in 2012.
Watch the latest video for 'Born To Die', a follow on from the hit 'Video Games'.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Bag1gUxuU0g" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Jacqui LewisWed, 28 Dec 2011 10:00:00 ESTThe Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Moonlight Cinemahttp://www.thegaleries.com/blog/article/the-rocky-horror-picture-show-at-the-moonlight-cinema

Sit under the stars tonight and watch a classic, The 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' is showing at Sydney's famous Moonlight Cinema from 6.30pm.

Buy tickets here!

Jacqui LewisTue, 27 Dec 2011 10:00:00 ESTExtended Xmas Trading Hourshttp://www.thegaleries.com/blog/article/extended-xmas-trading-hours

See above for the extended trading hours at The Galeries over the remaining festive period!

*The opening time for Ground, Level 1 & 2 remains 10am

*The above trading hours do not apply to the Food Hall.
Jacqui LewisMon, 26 Dec 2011 10:00:00 ESTTGIF-Festive Cheerhttp://www.thegaleries.com/blog/article/tgif-festive-cheer

Jacqui LewisFri, 23 Dec 2011 00:16:00 ESTHost An Event At The Arthouse Hotelhttp://www.thegaleries.com/blog/article/host-an-event-at-the-arthouse-hotel

Events are a hot topic of the moment, with summer, Christmas and New Years all rolled into one big festive season in Sydney. There is so much happening that we thought we would break it down into two bite size pieces over the next two Tuesdays.

Our first five are all based on their theatrical nature, because we all need to be a little theatrical sometimes!

Tis Pity She’s A Whore

'Tis Pity She's a Whore, is coming to Sydney straight from its Paris premiere. It comes from the memorable theatre group, Cheek by Jowl who were also responsible for Othello and The Twelfth Night in recent years at The Sydney Theatre Company. This is a tragic, tantalizing play of lust, vengeance and greed. It promises to be a standout in the theatre section of Sydney Festival.

Add it to your planner

Anatomy of An Afternoon

This is an afternoon of dancing not to be missed. Paul White has been called the greatest male dancer in Australia and this performance is sure to leave his audience in no doubt.
