Running is in its renaissance. Once a productive, and permitted, way to leave the house mid-lockdown – a 2021 Neilsen report showed that 13% of surveyed runners started during the pandemic – the sport has continued to flourish. In 2023, the Sydney marathon saw a 250% surge in entries for the event, with 48% of all participants being marathon first-timers.

A lot of this is down to the rise of running clubs across Australia. People who previously would have shuddered at the idea of waking up at 6 am to do a 6 km run before work are now embracing running as a pastime, and a lifestyle. The best part? There’s one for every vibe. From the Croissant Run Club (where a five- to seven-kilometre run ends at a bakery for a croissant and coffee) to the 440 run club in Bronte which even on the chilliest of winter days ends with a swim in the ocean, it’s likely your run club could become an important part of your social life.

For some, run clubs have also become a way to find love. As fatigue sets in with dating apps, people are turning to running to meet like-minded singles. The Clifton Hill-based running group, Love The Run, for instance, has resulted in several relationships and even a marriage. “Running clubs are the new dating apps with the simple pipeline of run, rizz, relationship,” one viral TikTok voiceover says. “Start chatting to someone and if you don’t like them, up your pace a bit. The days of asking for someone’s Snapchat are over. It’s now, ‘what’s your Strava?’”
